Modern Decor Style
by Megan Thriepland
The terms “Modern” and “Contemporary” are often misused. These two styles are not the same. Modern décor refers to a style created in the 1920s; it is a defined style that does not change. Contemporary on the other hand is an ever-changing concept of décor, referring to the popular décor and trends of the day, and will be different as popular styles change.

Rooted in German and Scandinavian architecture, this design movement originated in the 1920s and remained popular into the 50s and is still commonly used today. Its key elements include crisp lines, an emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines, along with the used of material such as glass, metal, chrome surfaces and simple, neutral colour schemes. Modern architectural features often consist of structural elements left exposed such as beams and brick walls. Furniture and accessories used in these spaces are described as simple and sleek and windows are often left bare without treatments.
