Contemporary Decor Style
by Megan Thriepland
The terms “Modern” and “Contemporary” are often misused. These two styles are not the same. Modern décor refers to a style created in the 1920s; it is a defined style that does not change. Contemporary on the other hand is an ever-changing concept of décor, referring to the popular décor and trends of the day, and will be different as popular styles change.
Today's contemporary encompasses a range of styles developed in the later half of the 20th century. Key elements include sleek lines, soften rounded edges, geometric patterns and an emphasis on basic shapes and forms. Furniture is often lower to the ground, includes smooth surfaces without carving or embellishment and is often made of light coloured wood with minimal graining such as birch or maple, Frosted or clear glass, stainless steel and chrome. Colour pallets are often comprised of tone-on-tone solid colors and muted neutrals with bold pops of colour.
